10 Unique Wonders of Kalenjins in Great Rift Valley

RIFT VALLEY in Kenya (part of world’s Great Rift Valley) is the only region having the largest number of athletes in the world:

Middle Distance Runners (David Rudisha World Record holder), Pamela Chelimo (the golden girl), and Marathoners with world records (Denis Kimeto and Wilson Kipsang).

°•° It is where unique tea is largely produced in Kenya e.g. EPK, James Finlay, Nandi Tea Estates Limited and more. Tea from the highlands in the Kericho county enjoy international reputation plus horticulture that is an important part of the county’s economy and cattle raising also being a key activity practised in large scale.

°•° It is a place where one man can rear a thousand herd of cattle like the Maasai in Kenya, as well as a place that a single family owning hundreds of acres of land per head is found.

°•° Rift Valley has the fiercest people in the world who fought the colonialist and resisted colonization like the Nandi people of Kalenjin who fought the British rule without defeat until the Nandi’s leader and foreseer Koitaleel Arap Samoei was shot dead.

°•° It is also the known rift to have men who fight and kill lions as part of the traditional practice – the Maasai.

°•° The Kalenjin and the Maasai are two of the best known ethnic group based in the site. The Maasai people have the most recognizable cultural identity and serve as Kenya’s international cultural symbol.

°•° In Kenya, Rift Valley was a name of the largest and populous province highly inhabited by Kalenjin people. It is the only determinant region that influences the country’s politics which has never failed to vote in a ruling president in Kenya except the in 2007 elections that erupted nationwide post-election violence.

°•° It is now the only province consisting of the highest number of County Governments namely:

  • Turkana
  • West Pokot
  • Samburu
  • Trans Nzoia
  • Uasin Gishu
  • Elgeyo-Marakwet
  • Nandi
  • Baringo
  • Laikipia
  • Nakuru
  • Narok
  • Kajiado
  • Kericho
  • Bomet

°•° The rift extends from Lebonon partially vertical to Mozambique.
